Welcome from the President
Dear Academicians and Visitors:
This is my first communication as the new president of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine (IAASM). Becoming your president is an honour and a professional dream come true, and I truly appreciate the trust and confidence that you have deposited in me to lead our great organization. I am very grateful to all of my mentors, professors, colleagues, and friends who took the time and effort to support my professional development and career advancement over many years.
Founded in 1955, IAASM promotes the field of Aerospace Medicine and allied disciplines through international collaboration. Our Academy is a unique professional organization different in scope and purpose from all other medical societies, and those differences contribute to our organizational strength. Compared to other professional medical organizations we have a relatively small group of outstanding leaders and professionals dedicated to Aerospace Medicine and allied disciplines around the world, and such a close network of colleagues makes it possible for us to have an impact on a global scale. Membership is limited to 275 colleagues from around the world. Our Academy includes international experts with a variety of educational and professional backgrounds that promote our multidisciplinary nature and contribute to our valuable diversity.
The IAASM Scholarship has been a great tool to promote post-graduate education and research among young professionals in Aerospace Medicine and allied disciplines around the world, particularly among those countries needing knowledgeable and experienced professionals in this field.
Our annual International Congress of Aviation & Space Medicine (ICASM) provides an excellent forum not only for the exchange of scientific knowledge and experience, but it also creates the ideal atmosphere for effective networking and for cultivating professional working relationships and friendships. The ICASM is jointly organized by our Academy and a host country with the support of their government, civil/military aviation organizations, national aerospace/aviation medicine society, and other aviation/space advocacy groups.
Italy hosted a very successful ICASM in Rome in September 2017 supported by their Aeronautica Militare, Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, Ministero della Salute, Consiglio Nazionalle delle Ricerche, Agencia Spaziale Italiana, Ente Nazionale per L’Aviazione Civile, Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo and ENAV. The outstanding scientific program was the result of the joint efforts between the local Scientific Committee and the IAASM Scientific Programme Committee. The Italian National Research Council provided an excellent venue for this event. The Gala Dinner held at the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj with its very extensive collection of painting and sculpture masterpieces was a unique and impressive location to conduct the official transfer of responsibility for ICASM from Italy to next year’s host, Thailand, and to close the congress with a special ceremony to install the new IAASM President.
In 2018, Thailand will host the 66th ICASM in Bangkok under the theme “Sharing the Sky Safely”, following their previous success hosting the 2008 ICASM.
The global aerospace transportation system (civilian and military) will continue to generate many challenges with associated opportunities for academicians to contribute and make a difference by working together through our Academy. As an academician you can contribute by assisting in the recruitment of new academicians; volunteering to participate in educational outreach activities to promote our scientific discipline; getting involved in mentoring the next generation of colleagues; submitting abstracts for presentation in the annual International Congress of Aviation & Space Medicine; actively participating in the general assembly and exercising your voting privileges; expressing your interest in joining any of the various committees that perform critical functions in support of our Academy, and promptly paying your annual dues. As members of our Academy you are the most valuable and important assets, and our future as international leaders in Aerospace Medicine depends on your willingness to become actively involved to enhance the impact and relevance of our scientific field.
If you are a visitor to this page and not an academician, but support the aims of the Academy and are professionally involved in Aerospace Medicine, consider applying to join. We are always ready to welcome new members who can positively contribute to the development of Aerospace Medicine.
