Dr James Vanderploeg handed over the Presidency of the Academy to Prof David Gradwell at the Academicians' Dinner at ICAM22. Prof Gradwell thanked Dr Vanderploeg for taking the Academy through a turbulent time during Covid, for his extended 3 year tenure and for the huge amount of time and effort he had devoted to duties as the Academy's webmaster.
The International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine (IAASM) developed an Outreach Programme in 2019 for schools with demonstrated academic excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects. Eligible schools are those that are local to the site of the annual International Congress of Aviation and Space Medicine.
The 1st International Conference of Aerospace Medicine was held in the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris, France as a joint enterprise between IAASM, the Aerospace Medical Association, the European Society of Aerospace Medicine and the French Aerospace Medicine Society SOFRAMAS from 22-24 September 2022.
EASA has announced a PhD scheme to develop partnerships with European Universities and academia, to share and disseminate knowledge in innovative, emerging fields relevant to aviation. There are four initial domains: Artificial Intelligence in Aviation, Impact of Climate Change on Air Transport, Environmental Sustainability of Air Transport and New Approaches and Methods for Safety Risk Management in Aviation.
Academician Marian Sides has been awarded the prestigious Louis H. Bauer Founders Award which is given for the most significant contribution in aerospace medicine by the Aerospace Medical Association. Marian is the 2022 recipient for her dedication to aerospace medicine throughout her career as a leader, innovator and mentor. She has been an educator and mentor to over 10,000 individuals and a leader in aeromedical evacuation sorties and in-flight medical care and humanitarian mission support.
